According to reports, Avis charged a customer more than $6,000 after she claimed she drove a rental car for over twenty thousand miles.
North Shore News reported that a mother rented a car to help her daughter get to college.
She visited her mother-in-law in Kitchener, Ontario while she was in Toronto. She thought she drove 300 kilometres.
While she was waiting to take a flight to Paris, France, she checked her credit card statement to make sure it went through.
She said she noticed the charge for over $6,000 from Avis when she took a picture of her receipt.
She was charged 25 cents per kilometer for driving over 22,700 kilometres. She thought she would have had to drive for 72 hours straight to reach that distance.
She told The Daily Hive that she had thousands of kilometres to spare. It is ridiculous. I don't think I can fit that many miles on my car in a year.
After the media reported her story, someone only got in touch with Avis representatives, according to the woman.
A spokesman for Avis told The Daily Hive that it had apologized and given a refund.
Rival car rental companies have made similar mistakes before.
The customer was charged more than $4,000 after Avis said she had kept her car for 34 days after dropping it off and then flying to another country.
A customer visiting his dying brother was charged double for dropping off his car early.
Avis did not reply to Insider's request for comment.
