Pete Carroll said Friday that Geno Smith will start at quarterback in the opener against the Broncos.

He told the team after the preseason finale, a 27-26 loss to the Cowboys. Smith started Friday night, leading a field goal drive on his only series before giving way to Lock, who threw a touchdown pass and three picks.

Smith has been in front of Lock in terms of his understanding of Seattle's offense, something that has been said many times by the coach.

He's earned it, according toCarroll. The job was won by him.

Smith said he was told of the decision by the coach in the locker room.

Smith backed up Wilson the past three seasons and started three games last year while Wilson was injured. There is a lot of work to be done.

Smith took the majority of the first team reps this summer and started all three of the preseason games, though Lock was set to start the second one before he tested positive for Covid-19.

Lock was acquired from Denver in the Wilson trade. He is going to be a great football player.

Smith and Lock both said that they would have the other's back no matter what happened.

Lock was disappointed to hear that Smith had won the job. I now have his back.

Lock said his recent bout with COVID "kicked my butt" because he only had a headaches when he first had it. Lock was suspended for Seattle's second preseason game after testing positive for a banned substance.

Between the preseason games and the mock game, he completed 42 of 66 passes for 478 yards, four touchdown, three interceptions and a lost fumbled ball.

Smith went 33 of 58 for 350 yards in four games.
