Doug Mastriano, the Republican nominee for Pennsylvania governor, chose to wear a Confederate military uniform for a faculty photo he appeared in while teaching at the Army War College, which will likely further fuel critics' claims that he is a right-wing extremists.
Faculty members were allowed to dress as historical figures for the photo, but 15 of the 21 pictured wore their regular clothes and only one dressed in a grey Confederate soldier uniform.
Before retiring from the Army, Mastriano was a professor at Army War College, teaching in the department of military strategy.
The photo was taken down from the college's display after the news outlet inquired about it.
The military banned the display of Confederate flags after the murder of George Floyd in 2020 and recommended name changes for nine bases named after Confederates.
Mastriano didn't reply to a request from Forbes.
Mastriano won the Republican gubernatorial primary in Pennsylvania in part due to the fact that Democrats bought ads for him because they believed he was too extreme to win the general election. After President Joe Biden won the state in the 2020 presidential election, he urged the legislature to block his victory. He was endorsed by Trump just before the primary because of his support for the former president. Mastriano has voiced support for eliminating property taxes in the state and vowed to require every voter to re-register if he is elected governor. Mastriano's attendance at an April event that featured a video calling the 9/11 terrorist attacks a "false flag" operation as evidence of right-wing extremists is one of the things that detractors point to.
The Democratic Attorney General of Pennsylvania is up for reelection. The RealClearPolitics polling average shows that Shapiro has a lead.
