The eyes of the world are on Cape Canaveral, Florida, where NASA is about to launch a rocket into space for the first time.

The most powerful rocket is SLS. The project has been delayed many times, but it is ready for liftoff and has finally rolled out to the launch pad. The Artemis I mission is the beginning of NASA's programme to send humans to the moon.

The rocket's core will be separated from the capsule about 8 minutes and 30 seconds after launch, which will allow the capsule to travel to the moon. For the first test flight of the capsule, only mannequins designed to measure the forces and radiation of the mission will be carried.

When is the launch?

Between 1.33pm and 3.33pm, the Artemis I will be launched. There will be a live stream of the launch. There are backup launch dates if the mission is delayed.

The Artemis II mission will be the first crewed flight if all goes well. It will take a crew of four astronauts on a flight past the moon but not land. NASA plans to return to the moon with Artemis III, the first crewed lunar landing in 42 years. The delivery of a space station called the lunar gateway is expected to continue after that.
