The first part of the transfer fee for Emiliano Sala was paid before he died, according to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The French side's claim for the first six million dollars under the terms of the deal has been upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Two days after the signing of Sala, the light aircraft he was travelling in crashed into the English Channel, killing him. In February of that year, his body was recovered from the crash site. Ibbotson's body has not been found.

The decision was issued on Friday after almost three years of delay. The initial transfer agreement was fulfilled before the player's death, meaning that the first part of the transfer fee was valid.

The first payment of the 17m transfer was the only one that was being adjudicated over.

Cardiff: We expect to appeal CAS ruling

The Swiss Federal Court will hear the case of the 6m judgement.

The statement said that the city was disappointed by the decision of the court.

The important question of FC Nantes' liability for the crash, which will have to be decided in another forum, will not be decided by the award.

We will not make any payments to FC Nantes until the club's lawyers have a better idea of why the decision was made.

The club will take legal action against those responsible for the crash if the appeals are not successful. FC Nantes and its agents will also be included.

The club put in place a trust for the family and all of our thoughts are with them.

CAS' statement...

The decision issued by the Bureau of the FIFA Players' Status Committee in September has been dismissed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

In relation to the transfer of the player Emiliano Sala between the clubs, the club was ordered to pay 6 million euro by the Challenged Decision. The appeal was filed on November 20th. The written proceedings were suspended at the request of the parties and for several months.

The parties mutually agreed to extend the time limits for the filing of their written submissions a number of times. It was not possible to hold the hearing in person before the end of the year. The hearing was held on March 3 and 4. The first hearing was held at the new CAS headquarters.

Out of the total transfer fee of 17 million euro, the first 6 million euro is the subject of the proceedings.

At the time of the procedure, the other installments were not due. It was not for FIFA to entertain the claim that it was not required to pay any transfer fee to FC Nantes because they could be liable for the death of the player.

Nantes welcomes CAS decision

The Court of Arbitration for Sport has made a decision on the case.

The decision rendered by FIFA regarding the transfer of player Emiliano Sala has been confirmed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The court ruled that the player's transfer to Cardiff City was over when he died in an aviation accident.

The transfer fee was ordered to be paid by Cardiff City and they were sentenced to a historically high amount.

It has been difficult for those close to Emiliano to deal with this procedure which has been delayed many times.

FCN has never reacted to the misinformation campaign out of respect for the player's family.

What happens next?

Sky sports reporter, Kaveh Solhekol.

The statement fromCardiff said they were disappointed by the decision. They said that they expect to appeal.

It is possible to appeal the decisions of the Court of Arbitration for Sport. I think they will go to the Swiss Federal Court.

While they consider their options, they won't be paying. If their appeals are not successful, they will take legal action against those responsible for the crash.

The agents who acted in the deal will also be included.
