The expansion of coverage for T-Mobile users will allow them to connect directly to the Starlink satellites.

Existing 5G phones should be able to connect without modification because a slice of T-Mobile's 5G spectrum will be used for it. Next year will see the launch of Starlink's second generation satellites with bigger antennas.

The result is that your 5G phone will have internet access almost everywhere.

There are limitations to this. High-resolution video and gaming will not be included in the 2 to 4 Mbits per cell zone that Musk says will be enough for texting and voice calls.

At the end of next year, the service will be made available as a trial. It will be free with some of T-Mobile's plans.

If your car gets stuck in the middle of nowhere, it could be a potential life-saving situation, as Musk said at the event.

T-Mobile and SpaceX issued an open invitation to other carriers to work together for global internet access.
