Women will be able to find abortion clinics via the service of the internet giant.
If a facility provides abortions, they will be listed on the maps. According to the outlet, those who can't be verified as abortion providers will be flagged with a label that says "might not provide abortions."
"We aim to help people easily explore the range of places available so they can determine which are most helpful to them," a representative from the search engine company said.
For a number of categories where we've received confirmation that places offer specific services, we've been working for many months on more useful ways to display those results.
According to the first report on the new initiative, if a location provides abortions, Google will call businesses and locations to confirm.
Users of the maps app will be able to find genuine abortion clinics instead of places that try to steer women away from the procedure.
Insider reported in June that "pregnancy resource centers" don't perform abortions, but do offer alternatives like adoption and parenting support. Fetal images and vague language are used to discourage pregnant women from having abortions.
Many women went to the wrong abortion clinics because of the difference between these centers and legitimate abortion clinics.
The roll out of the new Maps feature coincides with the announcement that Yelp would be removing listings for crisis pregnancy centers. These locations would be listed as providing limited medical services in order to differentiate them from abortion clinics.
The representatives for the company did not respond to the request.
