According to Ed Werder, Dallas Cowboys left tackle Tyron Smith will have an operation on Friday.

Smith is expected to be out for at least 3 to 4 months.

Smith will have surgery on his left knee, Ian Rapoport reported Thursday.

Smith's injury came off the bone and he will be out for a long time.

A video shows him grabbing his knee after making minimal contact with another player. He left under his own power.

Jerry Jones talked to reporters about Smith's injury.

Jones said it was a big disappointment for Tyron. The battle cry is "let's get it done early in the season" because when Tyron returns, we'll be stronger.

It should be pushed up where we're in the lead. We can make the playoffs when we are healthy. This doesn't mean that hope is gone.

Smith had an ankle injury last week that he had been dealing with for a long time.

He was limited to 11 games last season because of knee and ankle injuries, which made him not a full participant in practices. He missed time because of a fight.

The Cowboys don't have a lot of depth at the position and the injury to the eight-time Pro Bowler is concerning. Tyler Smith, Josh Ball, Matt Waletzko, and Aviante Collins could all get more playing time.

The Dallas Cowboys will play their first game of the season on Sept. 11 against the Buccaneers.
