According to sources, the New York Yankees will have a left-handed pitcher on the injured list.
Sources said the Yankees will promote Greg Weissert to replace Cortes.
He made his first All-Star Game earlier this season and has been one of the best pitchers in baseball this season with a 2.68 earned run average. He never topped more than 115 in the minor league and blew past his previous career high in the process. The Yankee rotation has a 2.6 fWAR behind the one of Cortes.
The Athletic was the first to report that the injured list had been moved to include Cortes.
The Yankees had a clean slate of health throughout the first half of the season, but have had a lot of injuries recently. Cole and Domingo German are in the Yankees' rotation.
If there is a solution, it would be to move the man into the rotation. When he was sent down to the minor leagues, he was used mostly in the relief role.
Luis Severino is expected to return to the Yankees' rotation by mid- September. After undergoing Tommy John surgery in September, relief pitcher Zack Britton made his first minor league appearance of the season on Wednesday, while closer Clay Holmes could return to the team from the IL in the near future.
Weissert has pitched in 40 games for the RailRiders this season and has a 1.76 earned run with 18 saves and 67 strikeouts.
