The largest power plant in Europe was disconnected from the grid for the first time in the plant's history on Thursday due to fears that fighting in the area could cause a nuclear accident.

The two operating units at the power plant were disconnected from the grid because of fires in the ash pits of a coal plant near the nuclear plant.

The power to all the cities and districts in the region had been restored, according to the governor.

A loss of power at the plant could cause a dangerous situation by blocking cooling systems needed to ensure the safety of the reactor.

Both Russia and Ukraine have accused each other of carrying out shelling at the plant, which is still supplying electricity to Ukraine.

The news comes after a bipartisan group of former senior government officials and nonproliferation experts sent a letter to President Joe Biden asking him to intervene and request an inspection of the plant by the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant is Europe's biggest and one of the 10 largest power plants in the world.

Key Background

Concerns about fighting in the area have increased in recent weeks after Russia took control of the plant. Russia could attempt to connect the plant to its electricity grid in order to cut off Ukraine from its main energy source. The mayor of the city of Enerhodar blamed Thursday's power cut-off on "energy shelling." The city had begun restoring power. Russia and Ukraine have blamed each other for the damage done to the plant. The area has had to be emptied because of the attacks.

Chief Critic

The director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency warned earlier this month that fighting at the power plant poses a very real risk of a nuclear disaster. According to the Washington Post, experts say the Zaporizhzhia plant is safer than the Chernobyl plant that was the site of the worst nuclear disaster in history.

Tangent

Pope Francis called for concrete steps to put a stop to the war in Ukraine and to avoid a potential nuclear disaster at the power plant.

Biden was urged to act quickly on the nuclear plant.
