Kurt Busch will miss the start of the playoffs because of concussion-like symptoms, meaning two spots in the 16-driver field will be open on Saturday night.

The medical waiver that held Busch's place in the playoffs was withdrawn on Thursday.

Busch said on social media that it was not the right time for him to return to the No. 45 car. I don't know if I'm ready to be in a car again.

He was out since he crashed in qualifications. Since Busch was injured, the 19-year-old grandson of Joe has taken his place.

Busch qualified for the playoffs with a win at Kansas. If he hadn't been injured, he would have been in the playoffs for a 10th straight season. Martin Truex Jr., who was battling Ryan Blaney for the final spot in the field, was breathing a sigh of relief.

If I know I can't compete for a title this season, I won't take up a playoff spot. It was not an easy decision, but I know it is the right thing to do.

Toyota will still rely on Busch throughout the playoffs according to David Wilson.

Kurt Busch's health and recovery has been Toyota's top priority since the accident happened. Wilson said that his recovery wasn't to get back in a race car. The only thing that matters to us is his well-being, even though we're disappointed that he won't be able to compete for the title in 2022.

Busch was praised by NASCAR for how he has dealt with his injury.
