The latest launch of foldables by SAMSUNG extends its rule. The compact form factor, stylish design, and cheaper price tag of theGalaxy Z flip 4 will make it very popular.

It would make sense for my first foldable to come from the company that I've been using for most of my life. However, despite the improvements made to the phone, it's not the one I'm most interested in.

After taking a bit of a break, the phone is back into foldables and it does not fail to impress. It's got a new design and a very reasonable price. If the company brought the foldable phone outside of China, I would be the first to use it.

Time (off) well spent

On August 11, 2022, just a day after the Galaxy Z Flip 4 was unveiled, a new device was launched by the same company. The phone got a lot of attention, but I knew the phone was coming. Don't get me wrong, both phones are pretty impressive, but depending on how you look at it, the Razr has a slight edge over the Z flip 4. It's enough for me, even if it isn't much of an advantage.

It has a bigger cover display. This is enough of a reason for me to choose this phone over the other one. Users have more room to view and interact with notifications. It is possible to use it as a second screen for supported apps.

In addition to the larger cover screen, it also has a 6.7-inch Full HD+ primary display that can be used for gaming. There's a higher-resolution 50MP primary sensor, faster wired charging, and up to 12 gigabytes of RAM for better multitasking.

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 has some notable spec advantages, but the Razr 2022 is a winner to me.

That's not to say the phone is better than the other one. Water resistance, wireless charging, a larger battery, and a customization design are some of the advantages of the foldable phone from SAMSUNG. I don't really pay attention to it.

There's not much difference between the foldable and the flip 3, and I don't think it's worthUpgrading. The company took its time to come back with a new foldable after two years, which resulted in the huge step up from its predecessor. It was a good time.

Does Motorola stand a chance against Samsung?

A good phone doesn't mean good sales. I've learned that the hard way as I watched the business of mobile phones decline. Although it isn't known for its high-end devices, the company is known for selling some of the best budget phones on the market, and that's why it's third in the ranking.

The Razr 5G offered mid-range specs at a premium price that made it hard for it to succeed. Now that we have an actual flagship foldable from Moto, does it stand a chance against the giant that is SAMSUNG and its flip 4?

Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, thinks thatMotorola has a chance.

"I think it stands a chance given the lower price point, same size display, better cameras, larger and more functional cover display, etc.", he said in an interview. He is cautious in the presence of the flip 4.

The battery capacity comes up short, and it doesn't have variable refresh on the display, so I think it will have less battery life than the Z Flip 4, especially given the larger cover display. Given the lower price/ better cameras/larger, more functional cover display, I think will generate a lot of interest from traditional clamshell users and those looking for something different.

Anshel Sag, senior analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy, thinks that brand recognition is the reason why the company has a chance.

The Razr brand is incredibly strong and it evokes the flip phone era extremely well, but also that Moto has had more time to modify the design and style to differentiate more from the competition.

Did Samsung shoot itself in the foot by sticking to the same design?

It is possible that the design, display, and camera specifications of the GALAXY Z flip 4 could be kept the same. If users are looking to save a few bucks, they could choose the previous model, or if they want newer hardware with a more functional design, they could go for the Razr 2022, which has a more functional design.

There are no seams on the inside display and the hinge design is very good. I think that the battery capacity is small, but I hope that the efficiency of the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 helps keep the battery alive.

Don't mess this up, Motorola

The stars seem to be aligning for the foldable comeback. We've got a new design, an impressive spec lead by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and brand recognition to give us some real competition in the market. If it wants to have a chance at catching up to SAMSUNG it needs to approach this carefully and aggressively.

Global availability or pricing hasn't been mentioned by the company. The phone is only available in China. Sag believes that a global launch is on the horizon and that the Razr 2022 is one of the few phones on the market that has a chance of competing with the Z flip 4.

According to Young, the global launch of the Razr is likely to take place in September or October. According to our contacts in the display supply chain, the plans for this product are much higher than the previous products.

Motorola should put everything it's got behind the Razr to ensure a successful launch.

The carriers make it easy for consumers to buy new phones. It was not possible for many people to get the previous Razr models. As a T-Mobile user, I'm hoping that I don't have to shell out nearly a month's rent for a phone I don't need.

There is also the issue of software. One of the complaints I have had against the company is that it hasn't supported its phones for a long time. The company just launched the Edge with three OS upgrades and four years of software support.

It's still a bit behind, but it's not too far away from what Google provides, meaning it's finally stepping up its game when it comes tosoftware support. It is hoped that it can provide similar support for the Razr.

It's been a long time since I've wanted a Moto phone, the last being the Moto X Pure Edition. Since owning that phone, I've gone back and forth between the two brands, but now I'm all about the South Korean company.

I'll be more than happy to switch back if they don't mess with the global launch with carrier exclusives or downgrade features.
