The president of the NFL Players Association, a former center for the ClevelandBrowns, retired from football after eight seasons in the league but will still be involved in the organization.

He said he is leaving the game on his own terms, but also that he is looking forward to doubling down on his work as the president of the National Football League Players Association.

After he was reelected to a second term as the NFLPA president, theClevelandBrowns released him from his salary cap-clearing contract.

The offensive line was one of the best in the league in 2020.

Nick Harris, who suffered a season-ending knee injury on the second play of the preseason opener against Jacksonville, was replaced by Tretter, who had to clear $8.25 million against the salary cap. Instead of making a move to re-sign Tretter, theClevelandBrowns bumped up reserveEthan Pocic to the starting center spot.

The union worked with the league on protocols to keep players safe during the two turbulent years.

The league and union agreed to a new collective bargaining agreement that adds a 17th game to the regular-season schedule and expands the playoffs from 12 to 14 teams.

Increased minimum salaries, improved benefits for current and former players, and expanded rosters and practice squad were some of the things that came from the newCBA. The players' share of league revenue increased last year.
