Qantas will resume flights to New York in 2023, but it is not a route that most of us expected.

Qantas returns to New York in June 2023

Qantas will start a 3x weekly flight from Australia to New York on June 14, 2023. There will be flights on Sundays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

QF3 departs from Australia at 10:00AM and arrives in New Zealand at 3:15PM.

QF3 departs from New York at 5PM and arrives at 5PM.

The plane left New York at 7:30PM and arrived in New Zealand at 5:00AM.

Qantas is launching Sydney to Auckland to New York flights

The marathon flight will cover a distance of 10,173 miles in each direction, with a segment between New York and New Zealand covering 8,828 miles. The transpacific journey is blocked at 16HR15min and 17HR30min, and the overall journey to and from Sydney is blocked at 21HR10min and 22HR35min.

You could fly Qantas between New Zealand and the United States if you wanted. Passengers will be able to connect from other points in Australia to New York in one stop with Qantas.

Qantas will be using a Boeing 787-9 for the New York flight, with just 236 seats, which is a pretty sparse configuration, as many full service airlines have nearly 300 seats on these planes. The Qantas Boeing 787-9s have 42 business class seats in a 1-2-1 configuration.

How the New York flight fits into Qantas route network

Qantas resumed service in New York, rather than a new location. This route isn't old. Qantas used to operate a flight from Los Angeles to New York that allowed people to connect from other countries.

Since the airline couldn't transport passengers solely between Los Angeles and New York, the flight wasn't very full. Qantas and American have flights between Los Angeles and New York.

As a result of the joint venture between American Airlines and Qantas, this flight will be marketed by American as well.

Qantas plans to fly nonstop from Australia to New York and London as of 2025, as the airline has ordered A350-1000s that will be able to operate these flights nonstop The world's longest flights will be by them.

It will be the third longest route, at 8,823 miles.

  • Perth to London covers a distance of 9,009 miles
  • Melbourne to Dallas covers a distance of 8,992 miles

Qantas is more or less copying Air New Zealand with this new service, as the airline is launching 3x weekly flights between New York and New Zealand as of September 2022.

Air New Zealand also operates Auckland to New York flights

Qantas has a plan to take delivery of three more Boeing 787s in the next year. The airline has been dealing with the same issues as other airlines, but Boeing has been able to resume deliveries.

Qantas is taking delivery of three more Boeing 787s soon

Bottom line

Qantas will launch a 3x weekly flight between New York and Australia in June of 2023. The airline will use a Boeing 787-9 for this service, and it is expected that this flight will stay around until Qantas is able to launch a nonstop flight from Australia to New York.

This seems to me like a smart way for Qantas to return to New York, and it will give them some competition from Air New Zealand.
