A group of men were hanging out in a small concrete courtyard near the intersection of Park Heights andShirley avenues when a silver sedan drove up and multiple people opened fire.
The shooting took place along the busy thoroughfare. The courtyard is a common gathering spot for older men who like to play cards.
Baltimore Police Commissioner Michael Harrison said that the incident was a mass casualty one. It was very brazen and very cowardice to open fire on a group of people when you got out of a vehicle.
Harrison appealed to members of the public to call the police with information. Multiple people jumped out of a silver four-door Lexus and fled north on Park Heights Avenue after the attack.
The police released photos of a car.
Harrison said that they needed people to call them immediately. Someone needs to know who was in that car. They need to be held accountable.
Two people collapsed on the scene. The other five went to the hospital. Police said all the victims were men.
The officers placed evidence markers.
The mural depicts a human pyramid. There were chairs on the pavement and in grassy areas.
People sat under nearby trees for shade on hot days. They frequent two convenience stores at the intersection, which is less than a block from the Park Heights office for Safe Streets. The goal of the program is to reduce violence by hiring people with knowledge of the streets and criminal histories to mediation.
As state and local officials held a press conference on the other side of the city, a shooting occurred. The leaders gathered in East Baltimore to discuss a new state-funded violent and organized crime unit.
A young man who lives near the scene and asked to remain anonymous said he heard gunshots from his home. He went outside to look at the damage. One of the victims was able to speak after collapsing on the ground.
The man said his friend was the person who died.
The man said that he was loved by everyone.
In the hours after the shooting, he and other neighbors gathered outside the crime tape to exchange sympathies.
The group that hangs out on that corner is like a family according to Pam.
She asked what happened. You don't have time to get numb because once you get numb, you stop looking for solutions
She said she would like to see more outrage about the gun violence in Baltimore. She would like more people to channel their anger into action and advocate for their communities, instead of allowing division to weaken their efforts.
She wanted to know where the uprise was for us. It's time to stop. People need to let go of things. We all want to go back to our homes.
Baltimore has had 233 homicides so far this year, which is an increase from the previous year and puts the city on track to surpass 300 homicides for the eighth year in a row. More daytime gunfire and more multi-victim shootings have been noticed by officials.
Marvin Knight said he was visiting his sister when he heard gunshots.
We didn't say anything. He said that he felt icy.
City officials are making empty promises about reducing gun violence.
He said it was all politics. The citizens of Baltimore City have not been treated well by the elected officials. The city wasn't failed by us. The city didn't do enough to help us.
He said that closing recreation centers and de funding city schools helped put neighborhoods like Park Heights on a downhill trajectory.
Richardson was trying to visit his family in Park Heights when the crime scene blocked his route. He pointed out several boarded up houses and said he was sad that the neighborhood he grew up in had deteriorated.
Richardson said that it brought down the people's spirits. They think they are worthless. Young people are not pushed to do anything better.
Richardson was looking at the crime scene when a woman walked by and talked to him. She didn't want to be identified for safety reasons. She went to check on friends of hers who live in the block that was taped off after the shooting. The woman and her friends only go to the store at certain times of the day because of their safety concerns.
Richardson said it was likelimiting your own life. I think it is sad.
Baltimore Police want to hear from anyone with information about the shooting.
