Jerry Jones said that Michael Gallup would open the season on the 53-man roster.
Jones said that they don't want to do anything that would make it hard for them to get him in the first game.
Last month, Gallup said he wouldn't be able to play in the opener due to his knee injury. He would be able to come back later in the month if he wasn't placed on the waiting list.
If the Cowboys move him to reserve/PUP at the final cuts next week, he will miss the first four games of the season.
Gallup began running routes last week as he continued his rehabilitation.
According to McCarthy, Gallup has not had any setbacks in his recovery, but he was not ready to make roster decisions before Friday's game.
McCarthy said that they need to play this last game. There are young guys that are fighting for spots. We don't want to take away Michael's chance to play, but how that comes down at the end, that's really to be determined.
Gallup has been working with the director of rehabilitation for a long time.
McCarthy said that Brown was happy about Michael's progress. I hope we will be blessed with that process because he hasn't had any setbacks. He's doing a good job.

The Cowboys re-signed Gallup to a five-year, $57.5 million deal in March despite knowing he would need to be eased into the regular season. He was limited to eight games in 2020 because of calf and knee injuries.
The Cowboys didn't add a high-priced free agent because they knew Gallup would return sooner than later. Washington broke his foot in the first week of training camp after signing a one-year contract.
The Cowboys know what they have in Lamb, but they spent the summer looking at younger players.
Jones said that he feels better than when he first arrived. I like the whole thing of our receiver. We have a lot of things to scratch with the numbers there. At this point, we don't have room for an outside receiver.
