More than $3 billion in security assistance was announced by the Biden administration on Wednesday.

The announcement of the upcoming military aid package came as Ukraine celebrated 31 years of independence from the Soviet Union.

Biden said that the United States of America was committed to supporting the people of Ukraine. Approximately $2.98 billion will allow Ukraine to acquire air defense systems, artillery systems and munitions, counter-unmanned aerial systems and radars to ensure it can defend itself.

The delivery of weapons directly from U.S. arsenals isn't authorized by presidential drawdown authorities.

The USAI uses funds appropriated by Congress to authorize Wednesday's package. America's defense industry is funded by the USAI.

The Pentagon said in a statement that the announcement was the beginning of a process to provide additional priority capabilities to Ukraine.

Six additional National Advanced Surface-to- Air Missile Systems, or NASAMS, as well as munitions for those systems are included in the package.

The Vampire drones are new to this package. The Pentagon didn't know how many they would give.

The biggest weapons installments to come directly from U.S. inventories were announced by Biden earlier this month. More than $13.5 billion in security assistance has been given by the U.S.
