We look at the best alternatives for those who prefer smaller form factor devices when there is no iPhone 14 mini.

The 5.8-inch and 6.1-inch sizes of the phones are changing this year, and Apple is thought to be removing the mini from the lineup because it wasn't popular with customers. Fans of the smaller devices are left with a purchase dilemma. What are you most likely to do?

Here's what you need to know if you want to buy an iPhone 14 instead of a small device. We are expecting to see a 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro, a 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max, and a 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max this year. The non-pro and pro versions of the phone will be something Apple has never done before.

Users who prefer the dimensions of a 5.4-inch iPhone mini are unlikely to switch to a 6.7-inch model, leaving either the 6.1-inch iPhone 14 or the 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro as possible alternatives.

6.1-inch iPhone 14 Design Changes

The design of the two 6.1-inch models will be different, with the non- Pro model retaining the notch that houses the Face ID components.

The Pro models are expected to have a hole-punch cutout for the camera and a pill-shaped cutout for the Face ID components.

With new camera technology expected to feature, the camera bumps for the 6.1-inch and Pro models could also get thicker. When compared to the iPhone Mini models there are no major design changes expected.

6.1-inch iPhone 14 Hardware Features

Many of the main features of the 6.1-inch device are likely to be exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro model, which will make it more expensive.

The A15 chip that was used in the iPhone 13 series is likely to be used in the non-Pro models, while the A16 chip will be used in the Pro models.

There will be an always-on display mode, a triple-lens camera system, and a seven-element telephoto lens.

The dual-lens systems on the standard iPhone 14 models are expected to get an improvement with the introduction of an improved six-element Ultra Wide lens.

An upgrade to the front camera is expected in all of the iPhone 14 models.

The starting price for the iPhone 13 is $729, which is the same as the starting price for the iPhone 14. If you want to learn more, be sure to check out our dedicated iPhone 14 recap.

The iPhone 13 Mini May Yet Stick Around

There is no evidence to support the idea that Apple will offer the iPhone 13 mini along with the iPhone 14 series.

When the new flagship devices go live, Apple could continue to sell the iPhone 13 mini at a reduced price, just as it has done for the past two years.

Keep an Eye on Apple's Refurb Store

The first certified refurbished iPhone 12 mini devices went on sale in July. While Apple's refurb store doesn't currently have the model in stock and its successor has yet to be listed, the long wait between launch and availability suggests that Apple could still sell the mini models on the site.

It's a good idea to keep an eye on the refurbished store after the launch of the iPhone 14 series, as Apple often changes the store with new stock in the following weeks.

There are unlocked and sim-free refurbished phones available. All refurbished phones come with a new battery, a new outer shell, and a new white box that comes with all the documentation. All refurbished phones are covered by Apple's standard one-year warranty.

In our opinion, Apple's refurbished phones are almost indistinguishable from new ones. It comes in a plainer box, which is one of the only differences with a refurbished iPhone.

The smallest device Apple still sells is the iPhone SE, which starts at $429. There are design differences to be aware of.

The 2022 iPhone SE continues to have thick top and bottom displays. The only iPhones that come with a Touch ID Home button are the ones with Face ID.

There is a True Tone to match the ambient lighting in a room that can be found in the iPhone SE. The chip is powered by an A15 chip.

To keep costs low, the iPhone SE has a single-lens 12-megapixel rear camera, with an /1.8 aperture with optical image stabilization, wide color capture, and Smart HDR 4 for improved highlights and shadow details.

Despite the lack of a TrueDepth camera system, the 7-megapixel front-facing camera has Portrait mode and depth control. You can find more details in our dedicated iPhone SE overview.

Wait for the Next-Generation iPhone SE

Ross Young, who has proven to be a reliable source of information for future Apple products, said that Apple is planning to release a fourth-generation iPhone SE with a larger 5.7-inch display as early as 2023.

It's not yet clear if such a model would retain the Home button and top and bottom bezels or adopt a notch screen with Face ID, but a 5.7-inch display would seem to put it closer to the dimensions of the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini, so it might
