At the end of the 2020 Formula One season, Daniel Ricciardo and McLaren will part ways, paving the way for Oscar Piastri to take his place.
After the Hungarian Grand Prix of McLaren's decision to end Ricciardo's contract one year before it expired, he was told by the team at the start of the summer break, according to the report.
McLaren CEO Zak Brown and team boss Andreas Seidl decided to go in a different direction after learning that Daniel Ricciardo had struggled for form this season.
"It's been a pleasure to be a part of the McLaren Racing family for the last two seasons but following several months of discussions with Zak and Andreas we have decided to end my contract with the team and mutually part ways at the end of this season."
McLaren wants to replace Ricciardo with a new champion.
The future of Piastri will be decided by the contract-recognition board next week.
At the start of F1's summer break Alpine had announced that Piastri would replace Alonso next year, but then he said that he didn't have a contract with the French team and that he wouldn't be racing for them in three years.
Alpine was the team he raced at for two seasons before joining McLaren.
He denied that he will quit F1 at the end of the year.
He said: "I will be announcing my own future plans in due course but regardless of what the next chapter brings, I have no regrets and I gave McLaren, especially the win in Monza last season."
I've never been more motivated to compete and be a part of a sport that I love so much.
Daniel has been a great addition to McLaren and it's been a pleasure to work with him. I would like to thank him for all of his work over the last two years. Seeing him stand on the top step of the podium as a McLaren driver was a highlight.
Let's enjoy the rest of the season and wish him well for the future.
Ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix, the split was confirmed on Wednesday.
