The 12 elevated tournaments that will have purses between $15 million and $20 million will be hosted by the top players on the tour.
The players' commitment comes on the heels of a players-only meeting that Tiger Woods and others hosted last week at the BMW Championship in an effort to rally the top players around the PGA Tour.
"We've all made a commitment to get together more often to make the product more compelling." I don't have a crystal ball, but I think everyone in that room felt this was the best way to go.
The addition of four elevated events with $20 million purses each will bring the total of elevated tournaments to 12. Top players will compete in the Players Championship, four major championships, three FedEx Cup playoff events and three additionalPGA Tour tournaments if they are eligible.
"Our top players are firmly behind the Tour, helping us deliver an unparalleled product to our fans, who will be all but guaranteed to see the best players competing against each other in 20 events or more throughout the season."
The Player Impact Program is going to be doubled from $50 million to $100 million in the next two years. The reward for the top 20 players will be increased from 10 to 20 because of measurement criteria and data. Some social media criteria will be eliminated and other criteria will be expanded, including internet searches, golf fan awareness, media mentions and broadcast exposure.
The earnings assurance program guarantees a league minimum salary of $500,000 for fully exempt members. 15 events are required for players to receive that money. Money will be given to rookies and returning members at the beginning of the season. The non-exempt members who were ranked 126th to 150th in the FedEx Cup will get $5,000 for every missed cut. Travel and tournament expenses will be subsidized by the tour.
The purses for several of the tour's top events have been dramatically increased.
