It looked different for a few thousand users when they log in. Instead of seeing posts from their friends and from the groups they're in, they saw posts from strangers on celebrities' pages. Users posted about their dilemma on other social networks, showing the state of their News Feeds with pictures.
Everyone following a certain celebrity page was getting everything other people posted on it in their timelines. Users tend to follow a lot of celebrities so their feeds are full of posts from strangers. Some people used the chance to look for jobs.
Over 2,600 people have reported the issue to DownDetector over the past few hours. The majority of the reports came from people who use the desktop version of the social network.
Sky News says that there have been reports of internet problems in the US, Canada, Mexico, Italy, France, Poland and Australia. The news organization was told by Facebook that it's aware of the issue, but it didn't explain what went wrong. A Meta spokesman said that the problem was caused by aconfiguration change. They said that they resolved the issue as quickly as possible for everyone who was affected, and apologized for any disruptions.
