The local sheriff's office said that a mail carrier died after she was attacked by five dogs.

The five mixed-breed dogs that are believed to have been involved in the attack will be destroyed.

The chief deputy of the Putnam County Sheriff's Office said that police were dispatched to the scene just before 1 pm. The postal service mail carrier Pamela Jane Rock was still in the street with heavy trauma after Sunday.

Rock's vehicle broke down in a rural area of Putnam County while she was working at the USPS.

Rock was given first aid, transferred to a medical center, and then moved to a trauma center. She was resuscitated after going into cardiac arrest.

One person shot a gun in the air in an attempt to stop the attack on Rock. The dogs were secured on the owners' property before police arrived.

Rock died Monday evening. Her niece said that prior to her passing, medical staff had to amputate one of her arms.

The dogs escaped through a fence. There have been four responses to the neighborhood for animal-related calls over the past three years, including two that were not confirmed to be the same dogs.

The animals are safe and will be euthanized.

The investigation was active and police were talking to the state attorney's office about a case. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the USPS were present at the scene.

USPS didn't immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
