We didn't know that Glenn Howerton was going to play the co-CEO ofBlackBerry in a film, and that it was going to be a comedy. It's not known when the film will hit cinemas, but production wrapped this week.
The book Losing the Signal: The Spectacular Rise and Fall ofBlackBerry is the basis for the film. According to the blurb, the book focuses on an unlikely partnership between a visionary engineer, Mike Lazaridis, and an abrasive Harvard Business school grad, Jim Balsillie.
Howerton will play “an abrasive Harvard Business school grad”
Canadian actor and comedian Jay Baruchel will be playing the role of Lazaridis in the movie, but we must confess to being most excited to see Howerton play Balsillie. The Golden God would be perfect to play anabrasive Harvard Business school grad.
It makes sense to tackle one of the market's biggest and bumpiest rides given the number of films and TV shows about tech we've seen recently. At its peak,BlackBerry sold nearly half of all smartphones in the US, but the appearance of the iPhone andAndroid cut its business down to nothing. It is a zombie brand that occasionally sells its name to Original Equipment Manufacturers to make their own devices.
Other notable cast members include Michael Ironside, Saul Rubinek, Martin Donovan, Rich Sommer, and Carey Elwes. Matt Johnson is the writer and director of the film. "BlackBerry is the kind of movie I never thought I could make in this country, but it's a bright new day for Canadian film." Director-driven cinema is back with a vengeance. Let's leave.
