The New York Democrats were locked in a battle for the heart of Manhattan after Rep. Nadler defeated his colleague in a vicious House primary.
After a redrawn district map caused them to compete for a single seat in Congress, the two lawmakers were put against each other.
The two men have represented adjacent parts of the island for over 30 years. The House Judiciary Committee is chaired by Nadler while the House Oversight Committee is chaired by Maloney.
The Upper West Side was part of Nadler's congressional district. Their districts were combined in May due to a messy and controversial process.
The 12th Congressional District will have two candidates running for it. The man who has challenged Maloney in the past was on the ballot as well.
The main fight between Nadler and Maloney was not neighborly.
He said to step aside. I said, "I'm running as well." In a New York Magazine profile of the race, Maloney stated that he was not leaving. The man said he was going to win. I told them I was going to win. She said that they haven't talked since.
Rumors have been spread that Nadler won't serve out his full term if elected and that he's senile.
New York Magazine reported that Nadler highlighted the differences in their voting records and said that Maloney had been wrong on major issues. A central part of Nadler's pitch is his faith.
She has sought to center her experiences as a woman in politics while emphasizing her record on social issues, including abortion, in the wake of the Supreme Court ruling. Gloria Steinem supports her.
