Geno Smith and Drew Lock are the quarterbacks for the Seattle Seahawks.
The two and a half weeks between the preseason finale against the Dallas Cowboys and the regular season opener against the Denver Broncos will be used to settle on a starter, according to coach Pete Carroll.
Smith is still in front, but he's open to the possibility that Lock could overtake him.
When he initially planned to make a decision, he didn't specify when, but he said it changed when Lock was injured, two days before he was set to make his first start of the summer. Lock took part in all three practices this week and shared first-team reps with Smith.
Lock will play a lot, but who will start Friday is not yet known.
"I'm willing to do whatever it takes to get something done," he said. I've protected the thought of Geno being the leader the whole time. He did a great job. He's been doing it for a long time. We don't know what will happen. After this there are two more weeks of practice. We're going to use all the time we need because I had a set of ideas on what to do with the timelines.
Smith has been on the first team. He started the mock game before the preseason opener. Lock was supposed to start against Chicago and go from there. Lock tested positive after taking all the first-team reps last Tuesday, despite feeling unwell.
It's a big day for me to find out what they look like. A man is coming back from a trip. He made it back two days ago and did well in all the walk-throughs. We will see how he goes today. I'm not closing the book on anyone who's trying to get in. Next week is a huge week for us and then we have another full week and an extra day after that. We have plenty of time to work it out.
Lock, acquired from Denver in the Wilson trade, outplayed Smith in the mock game and was having a strong night against Pittsburgh with a pair of touchdown passes. He lost a fumbled ball when he was unable to account for the unblocked player.
He played well. His rhythm was going well. The other game we used for the evaluation was the Lumen game. He was very fast with the ball. I want to see that continue. We missed a chance at the end when we gave the ball up. I would like to see him finish the game and make plays. He has shown a lot of great stuff. He scored two of the three times he drove against Pittsburgh. Because of last week's game, we are in a different situation.
In last week's game against Chicago, the Seahawks were blanked on seven first half drives. Three of his incompletions were dropped.
The plan is not to play two quarterbacks in the regular season, according to Pete.
He wanted to let the guys battle and let them show where they are and let us get as much information as possible. Geno has done a great job in that position. His voice is strong He is always on point. Drew has been very sharp and consistent with his work. It is not a good situation when you have two quarterbacks. The old saying is that if you don't have one you don't have anything. I'm not sure. We may have two. We're going to see what happens.
Kenneth Walker III was supposed to be back by the opener from his hernia procedure, but now he's not going to be. The second-round pick is in line for a significant role.
It's such an unusual circumstance that he has that I don't know how to refer to it. He's making a lot of progress every day. He feels like he's at home. I believe he made it through the sneeze. He is doing well. How much time will it take? I'm not sure. I think a lot will have to do with him because the doctors aren't telling us.
He's going to come back in a hurry. He's very strong. He demands a lot of himself. We are going to be hopeful that it will happen.
