Two men were found guilty Tuesday of trying to abduct Michigan's governor in 2020 as part of a plan to start a civil war and overthrow the government.
According to the Associated Press and other outlets, Adam Fox and Barry Croft Jr. were found guilty of all charges brought against them, including conspiracy to kidnap and conspiracy to obtain weapons of mass destruction.
Two men are facing life sentences.
Three months after a jury in a previous trial couldn't agree on charges against the two men, a new trial was held.
The verdicts prove that threats and violence have no place in politics.
"Plots against public officials and threats to the FBI are a disturbing extension of the radicalized domestic terrorism that is threatening the very foundation of our republic."
A group of anti-government extremists planned to start a civil war in order to line up with the 2020 presidential election, according to prosecutors. In October of that year, the men were arrested after they discussed blowing up a bridge to escape from the police. The two men were portrayed as big talkers who never intended to carry out the plots they discussed as they smoked cannabis together. The defense attorney told the jury that he was high on marijuana all the time.
