Burke Magnus said that scheduling the Division I women's basketball championship on ABC has been a goal for quite some time. The women's NCAA championship continues to generate strong audiences across the ABC/ESPN networks and this move represents yet another unique opportunity to showcase this marquee event and the student-athletes who are competing for a national championship.
The game could be moved back to prime time in the future, but at the moment it's not on the schedule.
The most watched women's title game in the last two decades was last season's South Carolina-UConn game. The national semifinals averaged more viewers than any other semifinal in a decade. The coverage averaged 634,000 viewers, up from the previous year.
The title game of the NCAA women's tournament has not been aired by ABC in the last two years.
Beth Goetz, chair of the NCAA Division I women's basketball committee and athletic director at Ball State, said that it was a benchmark announcement for women's basketball in being able to showcase the national championship game in Dallas for an expanded audience on ABC. The partnership between ABC/ESPN and the game and championship continues to grow.
The regionals of the NCAA tournament will be held in two locations, with eight teams playing in South Carolina and the others in Seattle. This format will be followed through the year 2027.
The Division II and Division III championship games will be held in Dallas on the same weekend as the Final Four. This is the first time since 2016 that the three championship have been held in the same city.
