The American Oversight is raising the alarm about the practice of data wiping at the Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, and the US Secret Service.
Heather Sawyer, executive director of American Oversight, told CNN that "we cannot stand by as agency after agency admits that they destroy public records."
The law requires that the records be retained, Sawyer said in a statement.
American Oversight is looking for information from former Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials about a criminal case involving a Massachusetts state judge. Joseph has been charged with aiding and abetting an illegal alien.
ICE Chief Technology Officer Richard Clark told American Oversight that he couldn't give any related emails or text messages because the phones of Homan, Albence and Vitello had been wiped clean. According to American Oversight, the scrubbing happened after the group asked to review the records in 2019.
The January 6 select committee was given cell phone numbers for various agents by the Secret Service after it was found that they had deleted data.
