The football coach at a public university is paid the highest amount.

During a meeting on Tuesday, Alabama's board of trustees approved a one-year extension and raise for head football coach Nick Saban. He will be paid an average of $11.7 million per year over the course of the amended deal.

Kirby Smart, the Georgia coach who signed a new dea l earlier in the year that will pay him an average of $11.2 million over 10 years, received a raise of his own.

The Alabama athletic director was given an extension and raise on Tuesday. The new deal pays him an average of 1.7 million dollars a year.

He would be 78 years old at the end of his new contract.

He lost to Georgia in the national championship game after winning his 10th SEC title.

The university can revisit annually "marketplace trends regarding head football coach compensation" according to the clause in the contract.

In addition, there are bonuses for appearing in a New Year's Six bowl game, appearing in a national championship semifinal game, and winning a national championship.

Alabama was the favorite to win the SEC again. The quarterback returned to the Alabama team.

The season opener for Alabama is against Utah State.
