The Seven Kingdoms were taken over by a clan of fireproof, dragon-riding blondes who committed a lot of sibling incest. House Targaryen ruled for hundreds of years until one of their descendants fumbled the bag and allowed Robert Baratheon to take the throne. We all know how that turned out.

The period before and during a civil war called the Dance of the Dragons is when House of the Dragon takes place. There are a lot more Targaryens in this time period than there were in the previous show. Don't fret, we have you.

At the beginning of House of the Dragon, there is a family tree. Only the most relevant children in each generation are included, since detailing the dozens of rogue cousins, minor monarchs, and temporary heirs would take longer than just watching the first episode.

Aegon “The Conqueror” Targaryen and Rhaenys Targaryen

If there is a dead Targaryen on Game of Throne, it is Aegon "The Conqueror". The majority of the Seven Kingdoms were unified under his rule. According to the extremely nasty family tradition, Aegon married both of his sisters, Rhaenys and Viseya.

Siblings are incest.

Aenys Targaryen is a relevant child.

Aenys Targaryen and Alyssa Velaryon

First of all, it's pronounced "enas" Don't be mean. Since the foundation of the Targaryen dynasty, the Velaryon family has been involved in the throne game.

This family's first cousins are the genetic equivalent of a rando.

The Targaryen children are relevant.

These two are actually kind of sweet. They ran away to marry each other because they loved each other so much as children. Yes, butnope. It's still terrible.

The Targaryens had a golden age under the rule of Jaehaerys and Alysanne. They had a lot of kids but only a few that mattered in the long run.

Siblings are incest.

The children are relevant in that birth order.

Aemon was the heir to the throne. He married a woman who was also his aunt. The heir to the throne was passed down to his brother Baelon.

Is that a guy marrying his parents' half- sister?

Rhaenys Targaryen is a relevant child.

Baelon Targaryen and Alyssa Targaryen

We are getting married to our siblings. After his brother Aemon died, Baelon became the new heir to his family. After he died, there were no eligible sons left to inherit the throne.

Siblings are incest. This is the second time.

Viserys and Daemon Targaryen are related to one another.

Daella Targaryen died giving birth to her first child, a girl named Aemma.

It's quite a shock.

Aemma Arryn is a relevant child.

Rhaenys is the first child of Aemon Targaryen and his wife. She married Corlys Velaryon in a love match that consolidated a lot of the realm's wealth and power into one mega- family.

She lost her claim to the Iron Throne to her cousin Viserys. Was that a mistake? Find out on the show.

It is a distant cousin to the point where it is washed.

The children of Baelon and Daella Targaryen are the king and queen at the beginning of House of the Dragon. They hope to have a son in the event that the throne passes to Viserys brother Daemon.

Targaryen blood purity means "dragon-riding and potentially insane." The T is for Targaryen.

It's the first cousins.

Rhaenyra Targaryen is a relevant child.

The new House of the Dragon episodes can be seen on Sundays.
