According to The New York Times, the federal government recovered more than 300 classified documents from Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate.

The figures represent three batches of documents that federal officials have recovered in the last few months. The National Archives received a large number of classified documents in January and officials there were concerned that Trump may have had more sensitive material in the bowels of the resort.

The boxes were turned over last year.

The Florida estate was visited by officials from the Justice Department in June with a subpoena. They believed there were more documents that hadn't been turned over after reviewing security footage and interviewing Trump's aides.

According to The Times, former White House officials were tasked with returning the documents to the federal government, but Trump refused to do so.

The FBI went to Mar-a-Lago with a search warrant and recovered about 20 boxes. The warrant shows that Trump was being investigated for possible violations of the Espionage Act.

The Times said it was not clear what type of classified information officials found. The paper cited a person briefed on the investigation who said they included material from the CIA, the National Security Agency and the FBI.

It is not clear if Trump could be charged with any crimes. All government material must be turned over to the National Archives at the end of a president's term. The archives knew that there were missing documents, including Trump's "love letters" with Kim.

FBI agents searched Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort, sparking a controversy.

The FBI's actions in carrying out the search were described by Trump as a "politicization" of the Justice Department by a former president. There is no evidence to support the claim that he had a standing order to declassify documents that left the Oval Office for his home.

The DOJ is investigating the documents, as well as several other government inquiries into Trump's behavior prior to the attack on the U.S. Capitol.
