According to a source, the Las Vegas Raiders plan to release veteran running back Kenyan Drake and absorb a $3.6 million salary cap hit this year.
It was first reported by the network.
Drake broke his ankle in the 13th week of the season. He said after the exhibition against the Vikings that the running backs were the heart of the team.
Drake said he felt good at the time. I feel like I'm getting the plays down when I'm on the field. I'm getting hit after my injury because I'm getting out there. I feel good about my progress.
Drake ran for 30 yards on 12 carries and caught five passes in the preseason.
Drake signed a two-year, $11 million free agent contract with the Raiders last year, but the deal was restructured by the new general manager.
Several players were kept in Las Vegas for the Saturday exhibition at the Miami Dolphins but were also going to the game.
A crowded running back room still has former Pro Bowler Josh Jacobs, former New England Pats pass-catching back Brandon Bolden, who has yet to play in the preseason, as well as vets Ameer Abdullah and Austin Walter.
The teams have until Tuesday to trim their rosters. There is an hour and a half later.
