The House of the Dragon and the Targaryens were the focus of last night's House of the Dragon. With the inability of King Viserys to produce a male heir and his refusal to let his chaotic brother Prince Daemon lay claim to the throne, he named Rhaenyra as his sole heir.
As the first rule of all Seven Kingdoms, the Song of Ice and Fire is known as Aegon the Conquerer. Ryan Condal wanted to use it to connect the new show with the old one. George R.R. Martin casually mentioned that Aegon the Conqueror was a dreamer. The White Walkers came across the wall and swept over the land with cold and darkness. It didn't make the history book because it wasn't told to the historians. It is in George's mind.
As the Targaryen secret passed from leader to leader, it was nice of the author to casually let it slip that it was a legit thing. At some point, it will come out, as Martin said. We infused that into the story because it was a great way to create resonance with the original show. He said, "How do you create that resonance when you're told in the opening titles that there are 170 years between our show and the birth of Targaryyan?" Fans and watchers of the original show are aware of the threat that these ideas and concepts pose to the show.
This winter storm could fill each leader in the Targaryen line with an extra ounce of anxiety that they will be the one to lead the people through it. The Iron Throne isn't just a seat of power if we see that enter into this world and make them aware of it. If you talk about it, it sounds crazy because it is a seat of responsibility and a burden. Condal gave an explanation. If Rhaenyra just tells someone that there is a prophecy that they can't intervene in, what happens? What will happen after that? Either you are trying to avoid a problem or you are nuts. We were given a lot of interesting, dramatic things to play with. In the original show, there was an idea that their magic was coming back into the world, the only real magic in this world is the Dragons. We wanted to make the show feel like it was all happening in one place and time, so we looked for that other thing.
The rise of a Queen as her father believes would be the right person to handle it over his own brother adds more intrigue to why the White Walkers are out there. As the Targaryen family feud starts, it will be interesting to see how this motivates them.
