Most of the time fans know what to expect when the box office results are released on Monday. A big superhero or genre film on top, followed by a big superhero or genre film from the previous week. There is something new every once in a while. There is something... It's super.
This weekend, the number one film at the box office in North America was not a studio blockbuster. It wasn't a live-action movie. The film was Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. The movie made over $20 million over the weekend, besting the likes of Brad Pitt's Bullet Train and DC's League of Super Pets.
It's shocking to some, but not to all. Box office experts were aware of this happening. Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero opened on over 4,000 screens in over 3000 theaters, making it the widest opening for an animated movie in history. As a result of the cash, it has been ranked as the 6th most popular animated film at the North American box office.
In April 2021, the company had similar success with Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, which almost beat the new Mortal Kombat on its opening weekend, and won the box office the following week. It is noteworthy that Hollywood knows the audience is out there.
