The fixture was supposed to be played behind closed doors, but thousands of United fans gathered outside the ground in the hours before the game, and around 200 fans broke into the stadium.

In the 30 minutes before the game started, supporters lit flares and gathered outside the ground to chant "we want Glazers out"

Manchester United supporters' group 'The 1958' organised a march in protest of what they said was an ownership that was starving and killing the greatest football institution in the world.

There have been multiple protests against the Americans' ownership of the club in recent years, but the discontent that some United fans have felt since the takeover of the club 17 years ago has been going on for a long time.

On 7 August, thousands of supporters marched from outside Media City in Salford Quays to Old Trafford, prior to Erik ten Hag's first game in charge of United against Brighton, which the home side lost 2-1.
