A new partnership has been announced by American Airlines. There are things not to look forward to in this area.

Air Wisconsin will fly CRJ-200s for American Eagle

The pilot shortage in the US is having the greatest impact on regional airlines. There aren't enough pilots to operate all regional jets so service to many smaller markets has been cut

Service to small markets is a key part of the hub and spoke business model for the major legacy airlines. The new partnership with American Airlines helps address this issue.

American Eagle is a regional subsidiary of American. Up to 60 CRJ-200 aircraft will be flown by Air Wisconsin. The service is expected to start in March of next year.

Regional airlines are usually on behalf of multiple airlines. Air Wisconsin has changed over the years. Air Wisconsin used to operate for US Airways Express, American Eagle, and United Express before returning to American Eagle.

Air Wisconsin previously operated for United Express

Why I’m not excited about Air Wisconsin CRJ-200s

This development is noteworthy because of a few things. The CRJ-200 has been phased out by most airlines. The CRJ-200 was phased out by American Eagle as of early 2020 when partner PSA stopped flying them.

The CRJ 200 is my least favorite jet. There is no first class in the cabin of the plane with a capacity of 50 passengers. The cabin of the ERJ-145 is in a 1-2 configuration and I prefer it over the 50-seat jets.

I prefer the ERJ-145 to the CRJ-200

CRJ-700s and CRJ-900s have a first class cabin and are operated by American Eagle.

I have not flown with Air Wisconsin in a while, but I have flown on Air Wisconsin many times in the past. Air Wisconsin was one of the worst regional operators. I don't know how the airline is doing nowadays, but I'm skeptical of the company's reliability.

Bottom line

Air Wisconsin will be flying on behalf of American Eagle. The CRJ-200 aircraft will be used for the service, which is expected to begin in March. I don't think I'm excited about the return of the CRJ-200s to the American Eagle fleet.
