The layoffs affect staff in the US, Canada, and India, according to The Wall Street Journal. The chairman and CEO sent a memo to staff on Monday telling them of the layoffs.

According to CNBC, Ford and Farley said in the memo that building this future requires changing and reinventing virtually all aspects of the way they have operated for more than a century. Focus, clarity and speed are required. It means redeploying resources and addressing our cost structure which is uncompetitive compared to traditional and new competitors.

It is not clear how the cuts will be spread across Ford Blue and Ford Model E. Ford didn't reply to a request for comment.

Ford was rumored to be laying off staff. The company was about to cut as many as 8,000 workers and Ford Blue would be affected, according to a report.

Ford created Ford Blue and Ford Model E in order to drive growth and profitability, while Ford Model E will accelerate innovation and delivery of breakthrough electric vehicles.

There have been layoffs at other automotive companies in the last few weeks. Six percent of Rivian's staff were laid off, as were about 150 employees of Ford-backed startup Argo Artificial Intelligence.
