The students who were killed in the crash were members of the Indiana State football team.
The university said in a statement that two of the football team members who were injured in the crash were out of the intensive care unit.
There was a single-vehicle crash early this morning. The vehicle went off a state highway and hit a tree in the small town of Riley, about 10 miles from the Terre Haute campus. The driver and two passengers were killed when the vehicle they were in caught fire, according to the sheriff.
The sheriff's department didn't say who was behind the wheel of the vehicle.
The dead were identified as Christian Eubanks, 18, of Waukegan, Illinois; Jayden Musili, 19, of Fort Wayne, Indiana; andCaleb VanHooser, 19, of Liberty Township, Ohio.
They were both freshman defensive backs at Warren Township High School. Musili wasn't on the football team at Indiana State because he was a student.
Two people were injured, one was a running back and the other a linebacker.
The president of the university called the crash a tragedy.
Hundreds of students and others gathered outside the university's football stadium for a memorial service for the crash victims.
"It is a terrible day for Indiana State football and a terrible day for both the Eubanks and the VanHooser families," the football coach stated. The two young men were loved and respected by their teammates and this staff. They will be missed.
