Not all software can be updated. That is why it is important for developers to create an inclusive program during the design stage.
Trans people are a large group for software. Around twice the population of Alaska, there are over one million people who are trans in the US. We accept one of the least populated states as the second option in an alphabetized menu of dozens of options, but it's not convenient to add more genders.
99.5% of the population shouldn't have to scroll too much to find their gender, "female" and "male" should be at the top. Developers should include options for everyone who uses their software. That is not a big ask as a developer.
