In a message to employees that was obtained by CNBC, Ford Chairman Bill Ford and CEO Jim Farley said that there would be cuts in the United States, Canada and India.

The way we have operated for more than a century is needed to build this future. It requires a lot of focus and speed. It means redeploying resources and addressing our cost structure, which is uncompetitive compared to traditional and new competitors, according to the message.

Less than a month ago, Farley told analysts that we definitely have too many people in certain places.

In order to separate its internal and electric engine businesses, Ford split its businesses into two units.

Ford spokesman T.R. Reid told CNBC that there are opportunities to be more efficient.

At the end of last year, Ford had 186,759 employees worldwide, with 90,873 of them located in the U.S.

Ford is in the midst of a massive transformation of the company that includes plans to cut $3 billion in structural costs and invest billions to expand its electric and commercial vehicle businesses.

Ford's stock was down about 5% in the morning hours. The stock is down a lot in the next couple of years.
