In a deal worth up to $295 million, eBay is acquiring TCGplayer, a marketplace for trading card games. It is expected that the deal will close in the first quarter of 2023.
TCGplayer was founded in 2008 and is an e- commerce platform. Following the acquisition, the company will continue to operate autonomously.
Dawn Block, the Vice President of Collectibles at eBay, said in a press release, "eBay continues to build on our 26 years of experience in trading cards, power local hobby stores and Main Street retailers to deliver an online destination thatCollectors love."
Chedy Hampson said in a statement that the acquisition will give the company a chance to benefit from eBay's industry experience and resources. Hampson said that he will stay in his position as CEO. After the deal is closed, the company will keep its headquarters in Syracuse.
Hampson said in the press release that they will advance their purpose and expand their tools and services with eBay.
eBay has been a place for trading card enthusiasts to buy and sell for many years, and the company has recently been working to solidify its place in the market. The company expanded its service in January to include support for valuable trading cards. eBay said at the time that it saw the value in adding support for trading cards because of the amount of activity on its site. The category of trading cards has seen $2 billion in transactions in the first half of the year. All of the trading card transactions that took place in 2020 are compared.
With increased competition from services like Facebook Marketplace and other local buying apps, eBay has been working to better establish itself as a place where people can seek out collectibles. eBay sees increased potential in trading cards, as the company notes that the agreement will allow it to maintain its position as a desirable platform for trading card sellers.
