A man with a concealed carry license was sitting in his vehicle on the West Side early Monday when he was shot at by a man who was trying to steal the vehicle.

The would-be carjacker was shot in the chest by the vehicle owner after he drew his gun. Authorities said the alleged attacker was critically injured.

The shooting happened early in the morning. According to investigators, the man sat in his vehicle in the 5000 block of West Crystal Street. Police didn't say what type of vehicle the man had been sitting in when the stranger approached him and fired shots at him.

Paramedics responded and took the wounded man to Loyola University Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition.

Police did not know how many times the wounded man had fired at the victim, but he did not suffer any injuries. The gun was found at the scene of the attempted carjack.

The attempted carjacking is being investigated by detectives.

In less than a month, there have been at least two instances in which an attempted vehicle theft resulted in a shooting by a person with a concealed carry license.

The boy was shot in the neck by a woman with a concealed carry license.

The CCL holder is close to the person trying to take their property in the two cases. The woman was in her home when a group of men tried to break into her car. After a neighbor warned her about what was happening on the street, she came outside with a gun.

One of the people in the group pointed a gun at the woman who owned the vehicle. Dion Young, 13, was hit by a woman who had a concealed gun license.

He died days after he was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the neck.
