Some of Apple's laptops will be included in the Self Service Repair program, which will allow you to do some repairs of your own.

Users with MacBook models that have M1 chips, which include both MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, will be able to order certified parts, access repair manuals, and rent or purchase the tools needed to fix those devices starting Tuesday, August 23, according to a statement Monday.

Apple said customers will be able to perform more than a dozen repairs on their own. Additional repair options will be added later.

The self service repair program was launched for the iPhone 12 and 13 models. The company plans to expand Self Service Repair to all of its products.

The program will be expanded into other countries later this year and include other MacBook models as well.

The "right to repair" movement has put pressure on U.S. regulators to give consumers more control over their products.

If customers don't want to buy the tools themselves, they can rent them from Apple for a week at a discounted rate. Credit can be given for returning a replaced part.

Apple said in its post that visiting a certified technician with genuine Apple parts is still the safest and most reliable way to get a repair for the vast majority of customers who don't have experience repairing electronic devices.
