Four months after opening its Self Service Repair offerings to iPhone owners in the US, Apple is adding a few MacBooks. The 2020 M1 MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro will be included in the repair program.
More models and repair types will be added by Apple. The new M2 MacBooks, iMac and Mac Studio Display are included.
The display, battery, top and bottom case, TrackPad, Touch ID module, speakers, audio board and Logic Board are just some of the repairs available. The prices range from $5 for five screws to $580 for the logic board. The company says prices are the same as what it charges for Apple authorized service providers around the country.
The Apple MacBook Pro is a laptop computer.
The price is after trading in the older model. It encourages recycling and also keeps the prices down for Apple, which recirculates refurbished components back into the Apple community.
The company still gives a discount on the parts that are too busted to be saved. One logic board is nearly three times the price if you don't send the old one back. Potential incompatibility is also being addressed. There is no word on whether the issue could possibly break the warranty.
The logic board is one of the most intriguing pieces of the puzzle. I think handy people will use Self Service Repair for things like storage and RAM. If you send in the same part, the company will give you a discount. It is not cheap to buy a board with a larger hard drive. Users are discouraged from trying to lower the price byUpgrading after the fact.
Apple is giving its own tools for repairs. The tool size made people think. Getting a massive hard case shipped to your home to repair a little phone is not the most convenient thing in the world. Apple gives you the same tools that its repairers use. If you break the system during repair you can get out of a warranty.
The image was created by Apple.
Over the past three years, Apple has doubled the number of service locations with access to genuine Apple parts, tools, and training, including more than 3,500 independent repair providers. More than 100,000 active technicians are supported by a global network of Apple authorized service providers. Eight out of 10 Apple customers are located in the US within 20 minutes.
Self Service Repair gives the option to fix it yourself even if the process isn't particularly easy. You have to do the math on that.
There is a repair kit for hire. The good news is that the Mac kit is smaller than the iPhones because it doesn't require a glue- melting machine. There is more room for error because Macs are larger and less tightly packed. The repairs are only recommended to those with some experience under their belts.
