Ex-Middlesbrough & Southampton player David Armstrong has died aged 67
Armstrong (right) played more than 700 games and scored more than 150 goals in a career that also brought three England caps

David Armstrong was a former player for England and was remembered by many.

Between 1971 and 1981 the player made 431 appearances and scored 77 goals for the club.

He was part of the team that won promotion to the Second Division in 1973.

Between March 1972 and August 1980 he had 358 games, the most in the club's history.

He won the first of three England caps at the end of his time atBoro and went on to play over 300 games and score 77 goals for the Saints.

Dave Merrington was the former manager of the Saints.

One of the best left-sided players you could find was him. He was able to see a man and deliver a pass.

'Such a good pro'

In 1984 they reached an FA Cup semi-final and finished runners-up in the old First Division, but there was more to the man than football.

Merrington said he got on well with the man. He had a great sense of humor and was a great player. A bit of a joke made him laugh.

He didn't like being left out of the first team and put into the reserves. He would be hard to train for because he wanted to be a first team player.

He was a good pro and wanted to play in the first team. When he was not, he took it well.

In 1987-88, he scored two goals in nine games and hung up his cleats.

After his retirement, he worked as a radio commentator.

Merrington said he was brilliant.

If the team played well, he would tell you and if they played poorly, he would say so as well.

He was great to talk to and you got a good laugh from him.

He was a great player.

Middlesbrough also paid tribute to Armstrong with a statement on the club website.

The club is sad to hear of the death of David "Spike" Armstrong.

The thoughts of everyone connected with the man are with his family and friends.
