If everything goes according to plan, NASA's historic Artemis 1 mission will launch toward the moon next week.
The Artemis 1 mission is scheduled to lift off from the Kennedy Space Center on August 29 at 8:33 a.m. The sun rises at 1233GMT. When the time is right, you can watch it here at Space.com.
It won't be just for die-hard space fans. There will be celebrity appearances by Jack Black, Chris Evans and Keke Palmer, as well as a special performance of 'The Star-Spangled Banner' by Josh Grobin and Herbie Hancock.
"It will feature a performance of 'America the Beautiful' by The Philadelphia Orchestra and cellist Yo- Yo Ma," they said.
NASA's Artemis 1 moon mission has live updates.
The debut of NASA's Space Launch System megarocket will be marked by Artemis 1 The spaceship will return to Earth in October after six weeks in space.
Data from the deep-space radiation environment and other aspects of the flight will be gathered by the sensors. After liftoff, 10 small cubesats will deploy from the upper stage of the SLS. They will perform a lot of work, from hunting for water ice on the moon to traveling to a near-Earth asteroid.
The main goal of Artemis 1 is to demonstrate that SLS and Orion are ready to carry astronauts, which will be accomplished if Artemis 1 goes well. A crewed mission to the moon is planned by NASA. It will be the first crewed lunar landing since 1972 if Artemis 3 succeeds.
Artemis isn't designed to be a flags-and-foot prints operation.
The first long-term presence on the moon will be established with the help of commercial and international partners. We will use what we learn on the moon to send the first humans to Mars.
If Artemis 1 can't get off the ground due to bad weather or technical issues, there are backup opportunities on Sept 2 and Sept 5.
