In a move that is likely to further infuriate the already volatile political situation in the country where the former leader has called for a Sri Lankan-style overthrow of the government, police officials in Islamabad announced on Monday that they had charged the former prime minister with terrorism.
The inspector general of the Islamabad Police and a female judge were threatened by Khan in a speech he delivered on Saturday in the capital.
Khan told his supporters that he would not spare the police chief and the judge for torturing Shahbaz Gill, who was arrested last week.
After reports of the charges against the former prime minister became public, his party warned that his arrest would cross a red line, causing a large number of his supporters to gather near his house.
The Islamabad High Court granted protective bail to Khan on Monday and he will not be arrested until Thursday.
The former prime minister could face several years in prison if he is found guilty on the terror charges.

Pakistan's electronic media regulator banned the country's TV networks from broadcasting Khan's speeches live since Saturday because they posed a threat to peace and stability in the country. The global internet monitoring organization NetBlocks reported that internet providers in Pakistan blocked YouTube after the speeches of Khan began to be seen on the platform.
The Pakistan parliament voted to remove Khan's party from power in April this year. A coalition of opposition parties took control of Pakistan after Khan was ousted as prime minister. The Pakistan military is accused by Khan of being involved in a U.S. plot against him. Khan claims that the U.S. wanted him out of power after he refused to allow them to set up bases in Pakistan. Pakistan could resolve its economic crisis if it imported energy from Russia, according to Khan. During his official visit to Moscow as prime minister, Khan copped a lot of criticism for his poor public image. Despite this, Khan continues to insist on building better ties with Russia and praises Pakistan for doing the same.
