It wouldn't be a Game ofThrones spinoff without an Easter egg.
We didn't think people would need to see Game of Throne to enjoy the new spin-off, but maybe we were wrong.
The story House of the Dragon is based on is new. There isn't a lot of connection between the characters we know from the show and the ones we don't.
We thought that was what we would go in.
At the end of the first episode, King Viserys said something to his daughter, Princess Rhaenyra, that brought everything from the show back.
After telling her that she's going to be his heir, he whispered something. It might be hard for you to comprehend, but you have to hear it.
He starts with a story about Aegon I Targaryen, the conqueror of the Seven Kingdoms, and how he was able to unite them because of his desire for conquest. It was a dream as well.
"Just as Daenys foresaw the end of Valyria, Aegon foresaw the end of the world of men. 'Tis to begin with a terrible winter, gusting out of the distant north. Aegon saw absolute darkness riding on those wings, and whatever dwells within will destroy the world of the living. When this great winter comes, Rhaenyra, all of Westeros must stand against it. And if the world of men is to survive a Targaryen must be seated on the Iron Throne. A king or queen, strong enough to unite the realm against the cold and the dark. Aegon called his dream the Song of Ice and Fire. This secret has been passed from king to heir since Aegon's time. Now you must promise to carry it and protect it. Promise me, dear Rhaenyra. Promise me."
It's well, well. Are you referring to the song of ice and fire? It was 200 years ago that those words were spoken, and the weight of them is still there. It's been more than 200 years since the end of the world, and this serves as a chilling reminder that it's been a long time coming.
Mention of the prophecy will be more than just an Easter egg. The trailer for the upcoming episodes has it again.
In the promo, Rhaenyra says, "From my blood come the prince that was promised." His will be the song of ice and fire.
King Viserys said that the burden of knowledge is bigger than the throne.
The spectre of a long Winter is likely to linger over House of the Dragon in the same way that it did in Game of Throne. If we had to guess, it would be a driver for character motivation.
Will Princess Rhaenyra be more interested in forming alliances with the other houses if she knows that there will be a need to stand together against an external threat? Is it possible that she will become a ruler that focuses on peace and unity?
Even though we're two centuries removed from GoT, we're still connected to it.
The new House of the Dragon episodes can be seen on Sundays.
