Neuralink is a company that is trying to implant chips in people's brains.
According to four current and former Neuralink employees, Musk was frustrated with the slow progress of the company. The CEO of Synchron was approached by Musk about a possible deal.
Neuralink and Synchron are working on brain interface technology. Neuralink has yet to begin testing in humans, whereas Synchron has begun human trials of its tech.
According to two of the four sources cited, Musk didn't tell Synchron's CEO that he was frustrated with the progress of the deal.
It wasn't clear what a deal would look like or if it would involve collaboration between the two companies, according to the news agency.
When contacted outside normal US hours, Neuralink, Musk, and Synchron didn't reply.
Human trials of Neuralink devices were supposed to start in 2020. Neuralink hoped to begin human trials by the end of 2022, according to him.
It was announced last year that Neuralink is working to give people who are paralyzed the ability to control a computer screen using their brain chip.
One of the eight Neuralink co-foundings is Musk. The ex-president of the company said in February that he was investing in the company.
Neuralink will give a progress update show and tell on October 31.
