  • For the first time, I traveled to Canada to visit the Falls.

  • The reality of visiting the Falls wasn't what I was expecting.

  • I waited in lines and stood on my toes.

The US and Canada have a waterfall on the border. America's oldest state park is located there.

When I booked my trip to Canada to visit the Falls on a Monday and Tuesday in August, I was expecting to take a lot of hiking.

The experience of visiting the Falls for the first time was not what I was expecting. The environment felt more like an attraction than a nature break because of how large and beautiful the falls were.

I walked through a crowded boardwalk to see the falls from an observation deck that was obscured by glass and other barriers. I looked at the back of people's heads while waiting in line.

Insider asked for comments regarding crowds and long lines at attractions.

In August, I went to the falls. One of the busiest months to visit is this time of year. Kids are out of school in the summer.

I expected to see the falls from the hiking trails I've seen before. I was only able to see the Falls from the Canadian side, or at least from a boardwalk.

Between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m., I went between the boardwalk, my hotel, and attractions around the falls. During my time on the boardwalk, it was almost impossible to squeeze into a spot on the edge where I could see the falls.

People on a zipline dropped into the view every 15 minutes or so when I got a spot along the edge.

I thought the boardwalk was like Times Square on New Year's Eve because it was so crowded after 12 p.m.

I decided to try out some of the other attractions in the area because the boardwalk wasn't the only way to see the falls.

The Journey Behind the Falls is an official tour that takes visitors in an elevator down to a better view of the falls. The line to enter stretched all the way through the center. I decided to skip it because I was worried I wouldn't have time for more activities.

Skylon Tower has a panoramic view of the falls and the city. I didn't have to wait long to get to the top because it was a 10 minute walk from the boardwalk.

While taking a picture through the fence, the view from the observation deck looked more like this.

I had to wait for people to leave so I could get a front-row seat.

I walked away from the falls and thought the town was more like a carnival than a normal city. It was filled with arcades, cake stands, and people. I waited in line for an hour to ride the Ferris wheel that I paid fifteen dollars for.

The Ferris wheel has a view of the falls. The carts were completely enclosed when I arrived at the front of the line. I didn't think it was worth the time and money to see the falls through a window.

I paid $30 to go on a boat tour. This attraction is so popular that it was featured on The Bachelor earlier this year.

According to the Points Guy, I booked a 6PM time slot. The boat ride took only 20 minutes, but I had to wait in line for over an hour.

Insider didn't get a response from Niagara City Cruises.

There were two decks on the boat. The top deck has a better view. It was so crowded that I thought no one else could fit on the boat.

Being close to the falls and feeling the mist on my face was amazing, but it was difficult to fully enjoy it with so many other people on board.

The boat had a good vibe because everyone was excited to be there. It was worth the price, in my opinion.

Passengers have to use an elevator to get back up to the boardwalk after riding the boat. I was waiting in line for the elevator.

I thought it was amazing to see the Falls up close. Everyone should be able to see them.

It felt like I was watching a powerful force of nature.

In the spring and fall, the Falls are less busy than in the winter. When it's less crowded, I'd love to go back to the falls.
